Welcome to the Irish Draught Horse Society
The Irish Draught is the only native breed of horse in Ireland. It is versatile, athletic and intelligent with a wonderful temperament. Traditionally, it was the horse of the countryside. Because of its attractive qualities, the Irish Draught is well-known and much sought-after.
The Irish Draught has made the Irish horse famous throughout the world. It is a foundation breed. When crossed with the Thoroughbred, the Irish Draught produces a high-class performance sport horse that combines the best of both breeds.

The Irish Draught Horse Society Limited was founded in 1976 and is the registered breed society that represents
Irish Draught Horse owners, breeders and enthusiasts. It is a breed preservation society, dedicated to maintaining the traditional characteristics of the Irish Draught Horse for future generations.
The Irish Draught Horse Society Ltd places the utmost importance on the preservation of traditional characteristics in the Irish Draught breed. Accelerated dilution of breed characteristics and loss of genetic diversity in the herd in recent decades puts in doubt the sustainability and future survival of the Irish Draught as a distinct breed of horse.
The lrish Draught Horse Studbook has been maintained by Horse Sport Ireland since 2008 and was held prior to that by the Irish Horse Board.
The Irish Draught Horse Society Ltd asserts its right to maintain the Traditional Irish Draught Horse Studbook and has applied for the licence to the Department of Agriculture. Following a review in 2010, the Oireachtas (parliament) Joint Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food unanimously recommended “that the Irish Draught Horse Studbook should be allocated to the Irish Draught Horse Society Ltd, on the basis that the Society is best placed to support the preservation of the breed.”
In view of this recommendation and the continuing loss of traditional breed characteristics and bloodlines, it is alarming that the licence for the Traditional Irish Draught Horse Studbook has not yet been allocated to the Irish Draught Horse Society Ltd. The IDHS continues to vigorously pursue this studbook on behalf of its members who are the custodians of the breed.
The Irish Draught Horse Society Limited is a co-operative with charitable status. It is run under the rules of the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS) and has a democratic structure where each Member is a shareholder.
The Society organises an annual national breed show. It runs promotions at local shows and equestrian events throughout the country. Local activities are usually organised by branches.
