Report on Irish Draught Sale held in Cavan Equestrian Centre 8th October 2001. Reported by Michael Swords. Report from Breeding Committee Norman Storey carried out an analysis of the mares presented for inspection in year 2001. Total number entered: 184 - total number inspected: 172. Total number approved: 163. Of the 163 approved: 58 were born in 1999 43 were born in 1998 17 were born in 1997 10 were born in 1996 05 were born in 1995 05 were born in 1994 08 were born in 1993 17 were born earlier than 1992 Number of Filly Foals Registered Annually: Year of Birth Number of Filly Foals registered at Birth 1991 337 1993 384 1995 226 1997 179 1998 183 1999 181 Note: over the last 10 years there has been a drop from 337 to 181 in the number of filly foals registered. This has serious consequences for the long-term survival of the breed and the Irish Draught Horse Society. This year foals are required to have a microchip inserted under the skin for future identification purposes, this could further reduce the number of foal registrations. Report on Meeting with Horse Board on 7th September 2001 The I.D.H.S. was represented by Martin Collins, Sharyn Alexander, Michael Keane and Eddie Corbett. Decisions: - There will be no change in the performance testing of stallions.
- A grant of £200 is being considered for AID/RID mares to be bred pure, the grant to be paid on the registration of the foal. Mares accepted for Quality Brood Mare Scheme or the Premier Brood Mare Scheme 1995-1999 would be eligible. Mare accepted under the new premier mare scheme 2001-2006 will also be eligible.
- The Re-opening of the Appendix Register: it was agreed to re-open the Appendix Register on a very limited basis, the I.D.H.S. stipulating that applicant mares to have one R.I.D. parent and three R.I.D. grandparents. This arrangement to be reviewed after one years' operation by the I.D.H.S.
Other issues raised by the I.D.H.S. included: - Sponsorship for two classes at the National Breed Show
- Financial support for the Year Book
- Financial support for the office of Secretariat
- Financial support for a new stand for our Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Eiline Breenan.
Report on Stallion Inspections This was held at Cavan Equestrian Centre recently over a 3-day period. Of the 47 inspected 22 had the necessary points, 30 SJAI points or 60 dressage or 15 eventing points and were deemed to have been performance tested. The stallions are first ridden by their trainers and then ridden by an international showjumper over a small course of fences to access their athleticism. In all there were 14 draught stallions, 22 sport horses, 11 foreign-bred stallions. R.I.D. Inspections in America The Chairman set out the issues involved with this Inspection programme, this was originally planned for September 22nd but due to difficulties in North American this date had to be changed. This inspection will take place in the near future with 2 inspectors nominated by I.D.H.S. carrying out the inspection. Recent Equestrian Tour to Germany A small group of 25 breeders lead by Norman Storey of Teagasc visited Germany to look at the performance testing programme for the Hanoverian breed. Included in the itinerary was a visit to the National Stud at Celle, where 130 stallions are housed, during the breeding season this group of stallions is made available to small artificial insemination stations. The three year old stallions at the end of the 100 day test are subjected to very rigorous testing programme, over a dressage courses, a loose jumping circuit, their ability to trot and canter, is assessed, and lastly on a cross country course where their jumping ability and speed over a special circuit is examined. Of the 46 stallions under test, 50% pass the other 23 can be used as show jumpers, or riding horses, or may come back again for re-inspection for use as stallions at 8 year old.
