Show Results 2003

The National Show held at Ennis Showground on August 3rd.

  • The Euro 2500 Ulster Bank sponsored All-Ireland Championship for yearling I.D. Colt or Gelding.

The Leitrim Irish Draught Breeder’s Championship held at Mohill Agricultural Show on August 26 th 2003.

In all 12 top class mares and foals were judged by well known judges John Allen and Fintan Flannelly and Noel Hamilton. 

  • 1st Hugh Murphy’s Lady in Red by Grosvenor Lad with a colt foal Carribawn View 
  • 2nd Robert Davis’ mare by Blue Rajah with filly folad at foot by Corran Ginger 
  • 3rd Br Alphonsus Gavigna’s mare Ballydorney Countess with colt foal at foot by Ard Grandpa

Two excellent historical books are now available:

  • The Irish Draught Horse Society 25 years edited by Elizabeth Deane and Ann Loughnane available from Branch Secretaries. Cost Euro 20 paper back and Euro 30 hardback. 
  • Solid Silver – a history of the Irish Draught Society Northern Ireland over the last 25 years. Edited by Dr Charlotte Moore, Nigel Moore and Moira McKenna. Cost Euro 25 hardback and Euro 15 for paperback. Postage Euro 5. Available from Jim Steward, Steward Hill, Armagh. 

NOTE: The above books would make ideal Christmas presents for anyone interested in Draught horses.

Breeding Background of Top Priced Horses at Cavan Sale

  • Lot 3 A roan filly foal by Sea Crest out of Giner Anne by Ginger Dick sold to an English buyer, T. Holford for Euro 7000. This foal is a full sister to the Grade A showjumper and RID stallion Sir Revie. Vendor was George Draper.
  • Lot 56 A chestnut colt foal by Crosstown Dancer out of Suma’s Little Red by Glenagyle Reble. This colt was sold for Euro 2300.
  • Lot 133 This two year old filly out of Millhollow Starlet by Atwood Black Laughton sold for Euro 5200.
  • Lot 173 A five year old grey mare – Millhollow Molly by Crannagh Hero out of Macha sold for Euro 8500.

Missing Trophies

For a number of years two valuable Society trophies have been missing.

  • The Power Tray – last official record of its presentation was at the National Show in Lanesboro
  • The President’s Cup – last presented in 1998

The Appendix Mare Register

At a recent meeting of the Governing Boady it was decided to continue for one more year with the Appendix Register and also the Amnesty Scheme for older mares. Application forms for both schemes can be obtained from Branch Secretaries.

The A.G.M.

It is planned to hold the Annual General Meeting of National Council in February next. Branches should endeavour where possible to have the Branch A.G.M. in advance of this.

Performance Testing of Irish Draught Stallions

At a recent inspection held in Cavan Equestrain Centre four stallions were selected pending X-ray results. There are presently three stallions on test: 

  • Clonleigh Dancer 
  • Clonleigh Rebel 
  • Manor Pearl

The group will complete their performance test in mid-December.

Presentation to the “Three Wise Men”

At a very enjoyable function organised by Mrs Eiline Brennan in Jury’s Hotel during the Horse Show the Chairman of the Horse Board Mr N. O’Flynn made “the Hall of Fame” presentation to three very well known members of the Irish Draught Horse Society: 

  • Mr Brian Wall, M.R.C.V.S. Cavan/Monoghan Branch for his contribution as a veterinary surgeon, judge and inspector. 
  • Mr Timothy Sullivan, Laois Branch for contribution as a breeder and judge of Irish Draught Horses. 
  • Mr Gus Murray, West Cork Branch as a breeder and very generous promotoer of the Society since its foundation twenty five years ago.

Suggestions Required

Anyone who has proposals regarding improvements which could be made to the system of selection and approving stallions for R.I.D. status should contact Helen Kelly in writing. This can be done by individuals or at Branch level. All suggestions will be considered for discussion with the Irish Horse Board.
