Forthcoming National Sale This takes place at Cavan Equestrian Centre on Tuesday, October 5 th 2004 . Why not come along to see this magnificent Equestrian centre, and witness the sale of Irish Draught stock from the four provinces. When at the Sale visit the Irish Draught stand, where Eiline Brennan will be glad to provide you with promotional literature. On the stand for sale will be a selection of history books about our famous breed of horse. Looking forward to meeting you at the Sale Michael Swords, Honoary Secretary Cavan/Monaghan Branch Mr. Brain Wall M.R.C.V.S. RIP Brain Wall who passed away on 24 th September 2004 had a Life Long interest in Draught Horses. He was a life member of the Irish Draught Horse Society and was Chairman of the Cavan Branch for 30 years. In August 2003 he was awarded the HALL of FAME award at the ceremony in Dublin during the Horse Show week. He judged horses in shows from North-Antrim to West-Cork. He was for many years on the inspection team for upgrading of Mares to RID status. Brain ran a very extensive veterinary practice in Cavan, Leitrim, and Fermanagh. Brain made many friends over his 80+ years. The Society and the Horse Producing fraternity have lost a great judge, a true friend and a good Vet. Minutes silence held in honour of: • Brain Wall, MRCVS, Chairman Cavan/Monaghan Branch and life member of the Society. • Lynn Godwin (nee Aldridge) late Director General of the Irish Horse Board. • Michael Mennis, Roscarbery, Co Cork . The Appendix Register Breeding Committee recommended the register to be left open for another three years. Another suggestion coming forth – that the mares rejected at this year’s RID inspection for lack of bone should be entered in the AID register. There was much debate on the above toic, it was felt that members needed more time to discuss the above two issues: conclusion – each branch to discuss this issue and a vote will be taken at the next Council meeting. Year Book The forthcoming edition will be titled 2005 Year Book with an account of the 2004 activities. It is planned to have it ready by the end of the year. Forthcoming Meetings with the Horse Board Chairman stated that the Society had received a letter from the Horse Board requesting a meeting in conjunciton with the Development Plan for the Irish Sport Horse Industry. The Society was requested to make a 20-minute ‘powerpoint’ presentation. This presentation to be made by Norman Storey. It is planned to have a special governing body meeting in advance of the meeting with the Horse Board to arrange agreed issues to be raised in this presentation. Branches are asked to make their views known on relebant issues to be discussed, these ideas to be forwarded to Helen Kelly. National Show 2004 It was agreed that this even was very well run by the Tipperay Branch, there is need to have a look at the classes before next year’s event. The small mare class was an unqualified success. Mare Inspections 2004 Report by Norman Storey, Kilkenny Branch RID Inspections:

Michael Swords, Secretary Cavan/Monaghan Branch. IDHS Newsletter April-May 2004 New Chairman At our A.G.M held on Sunday Feb 29 th 2004, the Chairman for the coming year was elected to take over from Martin Collins who had completed his three-year term in office. Our new Chairman is Ronnie Kavanagh who is the present Chairman of the Dublin Branch. Born in Ballsbridge area in Dublin and now resides in Tallaght. He is a qualified engineering technician and has stood both Draught and Thoroughbred stallions. He is a member of the Kilmacanogue Show Society and was directly involved in the re-introduction of Draught Horse classes to the very popular show. He is married to Liz and has five children, two boys and three girls. The other officers elected were:
Governing Body: Two reps. Per province
The outgoing Chairman Martin Collins thanked the members for their co-operation over his period of stewardship. He thanked especially the sub-committee for the great work done. He thanked Anne Loughnane and Elizabeth Deane for the 25 Year History Book, which sold very well. He also thanked the National Show Committee in Limerick/Clare for staging the show for the last two years. Ronnie Kavanagh in his address to the meeting stated that his objective was to bring the Society back to the aims and objectives of the founding members. The National Council should have the final say in policy issues and not the Governing Body, as is the case at present. He plans to meet the Horse Board every September to discuss issues and plans for the coming year. He plans to deal with a single problem per meeting and move on from there. He would also like to see and equal number of inspectors from the Horse Board and Draught Horse Society for all Irish Draught Stallions inspections. Other matters discussed at the Council Meeting on Feb. 29th : The figures for coverings in 2001
The National Show for 2004 The introduction of a special class for 3-4 year old geldings who will be inspected on the day for RID status. A special class for mares under 16 hands measured on the day. The yearling championship will be very kindly sponsored by Templemore Arms Hotel. Ulster Bank has again agreed to sponsor the main mare class. Branch Treasurers are reminded to forward the County Branch subscription of Euro 127 to the Show Secretary: Eddie Corbett, Curraghduff, Upperchurch, Thurles, Co Tipperary as soon as possible. Note: The Galway Branch kindly agreed to host the show in 2006/2007. Junior Judges Course This was discussed briefly and it was agreed that the criteria to be met by junior judges should be clearly set down in writing for future reference. It was also proposed by Mayo Branch that the Irish Shows Association should be contracted so to prevent a situation where a local judge is judging stock at his/her local show. New E.U. Regulations on Horse Identification There are new regulations coming into force this year on the registration of all equidae. Equidae includes all species of horses, ponies, donkeys, mules and jennets. All the above species must have identification which provides the following information: Owner, ID number, and sketch. Vaccination records, laboratory health tests and medical treatments. The Horse Board will decide on the exact form of identifcation which will be required to meet the E.U. regulations. Stallion Book In the new stallin book issued by the Horse Board there are a total of 93 Registered Irish Draught stallions in 26 counties and 13 further stallions standing outside the country. The age profile of the stallions:
The use of registered Irish Draught stallions continues to decline from the early 1990s when 40% of the herd was covered by RID, the present figure is 16.1%. The number of pure draught foals born in 2003 was 391 out of a total of 4,915 foals produced. Summary of Press Release 19 January 2004 from the Department of Agriculture and Food on Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) EVA is an acute contagious virus disease of equines. Clinical signs: can cause abortion, other symptoms include, fever, depression, a stiff gait, swelling of lower legs, pink eye and swelling around eyes and scrotum, udder, nasal discharge and nettle rash. There is no treatment of EVA, since it is notifialbe disease any suspicion or confirmation of the disease must be immediately notified to the Department of Agriculture and Food. The protection of stallions iscentral to any control strategy. The Department has urged breeders, thoroughbred and non-thoroughbred alike to test and vaccinate stallions and teasers to be used during the 2004 breeding season. Rare Bloodlines J.P. Finnegan made a presentation at the last Council meeting regarding rare bloodlines. This committee recommends that it should be possible for ID stallions to be approved in the first instance by IDHS judges for RID breeding subject to full veterinary examination. He also stated that Dr Karen Hinckley is currently undertaking an assessment of RID stallions standing in Ireland as regards their genetic merit. Report on Special Meeting to Discuss Approval Procedures for Irish Draught Stallions The meeting was held on Sunday March 7th 2004. It was agreed to raise the following with the Horse Board:
